Austin Strange

I am a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Government at Harvard University. My research focuses on international political economy. In particular, I study China's role in the world economy.

My current research examines how domestic politics shape the foreign economic policies of non-democratic governments. Through archival research in Beijing in Taipei, I shed light on the domestic sources of Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) international trade and diplomacy.

With excellent colleagues, I also track contemporary China's economic activities abroad. Among other projects, I am writing a book for Cambridge University Press (with Axel Dreher, Andreas Fuchs, Brad Parks, and Mike Tierney) on China’s overseas development program.
